On 10th January 2024, the Faculty of Education organised an event in tribute to Prof. Ronald Sultana. He is deeply missed, both as a colleague and as a warm person. This event was attended by Prof. Sultana’s family, the Rector Professor Alfred Vella, past students and colleagues who crossed paths with him.
I fondly recall the warm discussions with Ronald relating to my PhD research work. I’m grateful for these interactions, his insights and feedback, his availability and humility.
I would like to highlight Ronald’s experience with the Society of Christian Doctrine (SDC). During the eight years I have been at the University, I have enjoyed his narratives relating to his experience at the SDC Naxxar Centre.
A highlight was in the months of summer 2022 when Prof. Sultana delivered three sessions of professional development to the Members. Before the sessions, I recall Ronald’s warm encounter with members whom he knew, whom he had worked with when he was a young member. I am aware that for him these sessions and encounters may have been charged with emotion.
At the beginning of one of his talks, he recounted how he was asked by the family: “Where are you going?” He replied: “I’m going to teach at the MUSEUM.” They retorted back: “Are you going to become a Member of MUSEUM again?!” He seemed to be appreciative of his SDC experience. In fact, his wife recalled how the SDC was his second family. He fondly narrated his experiences. For example, when, at the age of 16, his superior propelled him to teach a group of children.
During two professional development sessions that I attended at the University, he kicked off the seminars by claiming how he was initiated into pedagogy at the SDC Centre. This fact assisted me reflecting more deeply on the SDC mission, particularly, when thinking about those adolescents who eagerly come to assist in catechetical classes. When reflecting upon Ronald’s narrative about the pedagogical impact of his SDC experience, we need to continue being energised into mentoring and accompanying the young generation, keeping in mind that we do not know the potential contribution that each of these young people will be offering to society.
Research is the search for knowledge. We all aim that one day we are united with the true Source of Knowledge, perceiving the face that the saints urged to see.
Grant him, Lord, eternal rest, and peace for his family.
