“How is my relationship with the guardian angel? How can I give him room? How do I say ‘Good morning’ to him? I can say, ‘Watch over me when I sleep?'” With these questions, Pope Francis wanted to remind us of the great help we have and often overlook. Guardian angels are companions given to us by God to walk with us on our life’s journey. “If someone thinks they can go it alone, they are mistaken,” he says, “in that horrendous arrogance: thinking we are great, self-sufficient. According to Church tradition, we all have an angel with us, who protects us, and helps us listen. How many times have we heard: ‘I must do this, I must not do this, no, don’t go there’… It is the voice of our traveling companion.”
“Be sure that he will guide us until the end of our lives with advice, and for this reason, listen, don’t rebel… because rebellion, the desire to be independent, is something we all have; this is the arrogance, the same arrogance as our forefather Adam… Don’t rebel. Follow his advice.”
“No one travels alone, and no one should think they are alone,” the Pope continued, “because this companion is always there.”
