In February 2024, the SDC Members of Sagua la Grande, who are in charge of the Diocesan Commission of Catechesis, started a ten-week course for catechists of the diocese of Santa Clara. The course is held by means of a Whatsapp group consisting of about 250 catechists. A handout prepared by the Members is shared every Monday, and throughout the week, the catechists are invited to read, reflect and send their responses directly to the SDC Members. Some of the topics are: Teaching our children how to pray, Using the Bible in catechism meetings, Activities which make our catechism meetings interesting and entertaining and The characteristics of a good catechist. Mons. Arturo Gonzalez, bishop of the diocese, appreciated immensely this effort because, as he confessed to the Members, he is very preoccupied about the fact that many experienced catechists are leaving the island and they are often replaced by catechists who lack formation and experience. Amongst those who are participating in the course are university students and professors, doctors, engineers, deacons, seminarists and religious sisters. At the request of Mons Arturo, the handouts are also shared with those in charge of the Catechesis Commission of the other dioceses of Cuba, so that they can organize this course for their catechists.
