The SDC’s connections with Poland have been ongoing for approximately twenty years, starting from the acquaintance that Philip, a member of the Society from Malta, made with the Polish couple, Ewa and Maciej, during a Taizé meeting in Wrocław in 1990. Ewa and Maciej visited Malta and, through Philip, became acquainted with the Society. They became deeply interested in the charism and activities of the Society, considering the possibility to initiate an SDC apostolate within the Church in Poland.
In 2008, with the assistance of the late Dr. Marlena Knapczyk and Dr. hab. med. Szczepan Cofta, the Society officially initiated its contacts with the Archdiocese of Poznań. His Excellency Archbishop Metropolitan of Poznań Stanisław Gądecki, supportive of the idea of introducing people with a new charism and spirituality into the archdiocese, endorsed the Society’s initiative. The oversight of its activities was entrusted to Bishop Grzegorz Balcerek, who identified several parishes in Poznań where the Society could be beneficial. Ultimately, the decision was made to collaborate with the parish of St. Luke the Evangelist in the Rusa district.
On November 23, 2010, the first members commenced their apostolate in Poznań. They received significant support in the parish from Canon Krzysztof Wróbel, the parish priest of St. Luke, along with numerous individuals and families from the area. Over the years, various members of the Society from Malta have shared, and continue to share, its charism in Poland. To the glory of God, the apostolate of the Society continues to grow steadily, particularly among young people who regularly participate in the spiritual formation meetings and activities.
