This icon traditionally depicts the Virgin Mary holding the baby Jesus in her arms. The noble beauty of her face and the serene power of her expression evoke the classical Byzantine art of the 14th century. The Virgin Mary is portrayed as both beautiful and sweet, yet simultaneously sad and joyful, with eyes that deeply understand humanity. She appears serious, contemplating the future suffering. Her penetrating gaze invites us to reflect with her on the mystery of the Incarnation and the suffering her Son, Jesus, would endure. The light on her face is highlighted by small rays and a glow that emanates from her skin.
Mary is dressed in traditional colors, symbolizing her dual nature as both divine and human. The blue of her dress represents divinity, while the red signifies her humanity. The dark blue color of her dress lifts the viewer’s spirit.
In other versions of this icon, three stars can be seen on the Virgin’s veil—one on each shoulder and one above her brow. In Byzantine iconography, these three stars symbolize her virginity before, during, and after the birth of Jesus. The stars, typically golden and eight-pointed with a cross at the center to signify the Passion, appear as if added to the veil, resembling filigree pins rather than being woven into the fabric.
