On the Occasion of the 75th Anniversary of the Dogma of the Assumption (Malta)

On Wednesday 8 October 2025, the SDC members and candidates of the centres of Malta gathered at the Parish Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, Ħal Għaxaq, to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the proclamation of the Dogma of the Assumption. During this commemorative gathering, it was recalled how, on 1st November 1950, Pope Pius XII declared as a truth of faith the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, body and soul, into Heaven.
Those present reflected on the relevance of this truth for the life of the Catholic Christian in today’s world, and how it remains a source of hope and consolation for all people. Through hymns, literary readings, and prayers composed by the Founder, St George Preca, praise and honour were given to Mary for all that the Trinity accomplished in her.
The Superior General concluded the gathering by referring to the beautiful prayer written by Pope Francis in Evangelii Gaudium:
Virgin of listening and contemplation,
Mother of love, Bride of the eternal wedding feast,
pray for the Church, whose pure icon you are,
that she may never be closed in on herself
or lose her passion for establishing God’s kingdom.
