Between 30 July and 20 August 2026, a group of five candidates and two SDC members from Malta took part in a three-week missionary experience at the SDC Centre of Ruiru, Kenya. The five candidates, who are currently in the final stage of their formation and discernment journey, had the opportunity to experience the SDC vocation and mission within a different cultural and pastoral setting.
On several mornings, children and adolescents gathered at the SDC centre for a varied programme of activities including formative mimes, songs, dances, crafts and games, providing opportunities for learning, friendship and joyful interaction.
In the evenings, the candidates spent further time with the children and adolescents, prepared and delivered formation sessions, and joined the daily formation session with the members and candidates of the Ruiru SDC centre. They also participated in the apostolate at the outstation of Kiratina, where the members of the Ruiru SDC centre assist with catechetical formation on Sunday mornings.
Throughout the three weeks, the candidates lived together as a community, sharing in the daily life and activities of the residence while also making time for recreation, reflection and prayer. This offered them a valuable opportunity to deepen their experience of fraternity, service and missionary life.
Let us give thanks to God for this enriching missionary experience, which strengthened the bonds of fraternity between the Maltese group and the community of the Ruiru SDC Centre. It also offered the candidates a valuable opportunity to deepen their discernment and explore more fully the SDC vocation and mission.
