Holy Week at the SDC centres around the world was a time of profound silence and spiritual reflection on the life and Passion of Jesus Christ. A special programme was held throughout the entire week, during which those present recalled moments in Jesus’ life when he experienced sorrow and grief. This was intended to help participants grieve with Jesus and allow themselves to be inspired by the Spirit of Christ. Christ Crucified was the focal point of every session.
A deeper and more meaningful celebration took place on Holy Thursday, late in the evening after Holy Mass, when all were invited to adore the face of Jesus Christ. His face was venerated by kissing it, in both gratitude and sorrow for the insults he endured on his Divine Face – the kiss of betrayal, being struck, and spat upon.
Similarly, on Good Friday, the day of our redemption, participants venerated the Five Holy Wounds of Jesus, asking God to look upon his Son as the sole Advocate and Victim for our sins, and seeking mercy, peace, and healing for all people.
Holy Saturday served as a day of silence and reflection, in anticipation of Jesus’ promised victory over death.
Holy Week culminated in the joyful Resurrection on Easter Sunday, marked by a celebration in which all rejoiced with Jesus Christ of Nazareth for his triumph over sin and death. All those present received a lamb-shaped figolla, a traditional Maltese Easter sweet, symbolising Jesus as the Lamb of God.
